Everyone should have at least three updated anti-spyware programs to prevent, detect, and remove the malicious programs.
It is also essential to have an updated anti-virus program and you get what you pay for. Free anti-virus programs don't update as often and can leave your system open to infection to new viri.
A hardware router provides better protection than any software firewall but its better to have one of these rather than nothing.
