I am trying to get on a forum which I have gotten on from a friend's computer, but when I try to connect it says
"[16:37] Connecting...
[16:37] Unable to connect : java.net.SocketException : Software caused connection abort: connect "
I have the latest software, and my firewall asked to block it and I said no, so it shouldn't be having problems connecting, but it is anyway.

I am using Mozilla Firefox as my browser, the latest version. My IP address is 138.110.223.97. The site I am trying to connect to is:
http://equine-ranch.com/chat.php?nick=Maudie&page=chat

Any idea why it isn't working?

Please try updating Java as that exact error message is typically a problem with an outdated or corrupt copy of Java.

I have now uninstalled my Java and installed the latest, but it still isn't working. I am getting the same error message.

Do you have a router? Ensure that is not blocking port 6667. Also confirm your software firewall (Windows Firewall, ZoneAlarm, McAfee Personal Firewall, etc.) is not blocking that port.

How do I find all of that out? I have a Dell laptop with Windows XP.

If you have a router it would be a box thats between your DSL or Cable modem and your computer (IF your not on dialup.) You'd have to find the name and model number of that router and do some googling to find its documentation (so you can look up how you unblock ports.)

If you're running a software firewall beside's WinXP it should tell you in the Windows Security Center (Start > Control Panel > Security Center).

I do not have a router, and I only have WinXP firewall, which isn't the problem, because I tried turning it off and it still didn't work. Is there anything else that could be causing the problem?

Who is your ISP? A few block access to IRC servers.

How about child protection software, have you installed anything like NetNanny or AOL Parental Controls?

My ISP provider is run through my college, but I know it should allow it, because my friend who uses the same provider can run the chat fine. And I don't have any child protection software.

I'm completely out of ideas. There is something on your computer or between it and the internet is blocking access to port 6667.
