first mIRC's UI can be changed to basically anything you want, and scripting for it is a double edged sword. On one side you have a language developed solely for that IRC client, which forces people to learn a new language if they care to script for it. On the other side you have the fact that so many people use the client that scripts are readily available.
Personally I use mIRC because XChat fails to provide a multi-row tab bar so I would have been stuck with either scrolling in the treebar, or scrolling in a single line tab bar. I like Xchat because it supports so many languages that when I need a script I can find someone out there was have never really touched IRC to help me (Besides its native in linux)
As far as the macs go I don't have a mac atm, but have helped many people with IRC and macs and from what I gathered many of the clients on the mac are limited for power users (and Xchat Aqua is missing many features).

I use xchat but I wish that it had support for mIRC language because when I taught myself how to script for IRC I didn't know that mirc only worked in the one client. Either way xchat still trumps mIRC (client) UI wise, but I think that mirc has more features.
If you know of anywhere that I could start to learn any of the more popular languages let me know.

NOOOOO Jwire4, colloquy is really bad in my opinion. It MAY have a good User Interface, but I always keep on getting that stupid spinning beach ball....

Yea but when you look at Mac apps to windows apps you instantly see that you can run any Windows app in mac. Just use vmware fusion or Parallels. Look at a pc, can you do that? I don't think so. That is also what makes OS X one of the best os's out. Well im my opinion.

I like mIRC for the PC because you can do scripting, but the User interface is ugly.
You can set mIRC to use a different font and colors or install a script with a themer such as NoNameScript, I use NoNameScript for my bot and i absolutely love it.. i use the LookSharp theme...

I use Colloquy for my MBP. While I used to use X-Chat Aqua I prefer everything on Colloquy more expect the Nick Auto Complete - It lists nick and you can sort by last spoke order which makes me have to type more of the nick.
On my PC I use X-Chat only because I used X-Chat Aqua on Mac so it made it easier. But I think mIRC is far better but the UI is very jumbled. But its great.
ON the note of X-Chat being free - on my PC after 30 days I had to buy a license but I know there are many versions.
On my Ubuntu machine I use Konversation and just love it I wish it was developed for Mac.
And Finally on PC I even go so far as to buy people mIRC Licenses for helping me out with computer things. So in short,
On Mac - Colloquy On Linux - Konversation On PC - mIRC

XChat. It's totally free but you need ActivePerl to run scripts.
While one of the builds of xchat (xchat 2) is free, it is also updated less than the official version as it uses the source code to compile builds. 2.8.6 is out in source, but the silverex still lists it as being 2.8.4. While I don't like the fact of paying for open source software, I'd rather pay 20 dollars for one that is updated regularly. Also if you want to run scripts, you would also need activepython and activetcl depending on if you wanted to run python or tcl scripts
I use Linkinus for the Mac and mIRC for the PC, For the web, I use mibbit. I used to run colloquy, but it freezes and stops responding, that's why I have switched.

I use mIRC. Greatest piece of software I've ever used. Highly recommend it. www.mirc.com - if you haven't tried it out already. Worth the $20, Scripting is awesome, and UI is really clean and neat. Runs well on Vista too! (surprisingly)

not true. Colloquy is very unstable while it takes A LOT to crash mIRC. Colloquy has horrible scripts that no one even needs/wants. Linkinus is pretty much the closest to mIRC for the Mac.
