How do you know who you're chatting with?

In short, you don't know! When chatting online you should always beware that you have no idea who you are chatting with. They may not be who they claim. Women can pretend to be men. Men can pretend to be women or young boys. It can be a very dangerous if you should decide to meet someone in person because of this.

If you should decide to meet someone you chat with online always make your first meeting in a public place and go with some friends. If you're under eighteen ask your parents to take you. Follow your gut feelings and if you're at all suspicious or afraid cut the meeting short and stay in a public place where you feel safe. Don't be afraid to call the police or ask other grown ups for help if you feel you need it.
