Troll on IRC, Go directly to JAIL!

CNET News is reporting that, on last Thursday, President Bush signed into law a prohibition on posting annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages to anyone without disclosure of the poster's true identity.

However the wording of the new federal law is very vague and in fact can also be applied to trolls on IRC as it is not limited to message board postings or email. Therefore, if you annoy someone on the Internet and you fail to disclose your identity you can be subject to fines or even imprisoned for two years!

The law states in part:

"Whoever...utilizes any device or software that can be used to originate telecommunications or other types of communications that are transmitted, in whole or in part, by the Internet... without disclosing his identity and with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any person...who receives the communications...shall be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than two years, or both."
