Supreme Court: The RIAA, MPAA can F you up the A

The US Supreme Court, in an unanimous decision [pdf], ruled that Hollywood and the music industry may file piracy lawsuits against P2P software makers, file-trading sites, and IRC Networks that allow their users to copy music, movies and other protected works without permission.

The justices set aside an US Appeals Court ruling that the peer-to-peer networks cannot be held liable for copyright infringement because they can be used for legitimate purposes as well.

"We hold that one who distributes a device with the object of promoting its use to infringe copyright ... is liable for the resulting acts of infringement by third parties," Justice David Souter wrote for the court.

The decision comes as a surprisingly strong victory for Hollywood and the music industry and stands to reshape an Internet landscape in which file swapping has become commonplace.

Awful, someone might think you're talking about WyldRyde.

Just so there is no misunderstanding; WyldRyde explicitly states the network may not be used for file trading in the WyldRyde Term of Service. We immediate close all file-trading channels and ban anyone engaged in it and will fully cooperate with law enforcement.
