I am banned from a chat/channel for no reason?

Inevitably, at some point in your IRC experience, regardless of the network you use, you will find yourself banned from a chat channel.

What this means is that an operator of that channel has issued a ban, preventing you from joining the respective channel.

You may have been banned for violating a rule. You may have been banned by mistake. You may be caught in someone else's ban. Or yes, you may have even been banned unfairly.

Why you were banned is a pertinent question, and even though the kick messages might not always contain relevant reasons, you need to understand that probably 8 times out of 10, when you try to join a channel and can't because you are banned, that respective ban may not be directed at you personally, but at someone that is sharing the same hostname as yourself.

Probably someone from your ISP. This does not make it your fault, but it does not give you the right to demand to be unbanned.

Are you from Turkey? Some channels ban *@*.tr because of the high amount of spammers that hail from that country.

How to get a ban removed:
In order to get unbanned you need to talk to an op of that channel and politely ask to be unbanned.

If you know the nickname of an op, you can /msg message , for example "/msg Josh Please unban me, I did it by mistake".

If you do not know the nicknames of any ops, you can attempt to find out by asking someone else that was in the channel.

Keep the following in mind:
The ops of any channel have the power and the right to ban anyone from their channel for any reason, or even for no reason at all. You might find this "unfair", but try to think of their channel as the op's home. It seems right for you to be able to kick anyone out of your home, doesn't it? So, before you ask to be unbanned, you need to understand this:
The ops are under no obligation to unban you, and in most cases they won’t, so don’t have great expectations.

When talking to ops and asking them to unban you, keep in mind that they are running the channel, and that if they unban you they are doing so simply because they want to, not because they are under some obligation. So be super polite!

Evading Bans:
NEVER attempt to "evade" bans in any way, because ops can always tell, and a longer ban will follow.

Either wait for the ban to be removed or get in touch with the channel ops.

Can IRCOps or Network Staff Remove the Ban?
No! Please see: Can you unban me from so and so channel?
